What is the Moneyline and how does it work?

What is the Moneyline and how does it work? Moneyline is one of the easiest forms of betting in which you bet on one of two teams to win. For that reason it is very popular among American sports like Ice Hockey, American Football, NBA, Baseball, MMA and Boxing.

In order to explain this form of betting, we will use an example. The NFL game between Philadelphia Eagles (+181) and New England Patriots (-200). You might have noticed the way in which the probabilities are expressed for each team to win (American odds), but before explaining that, it is important to keep in mind that with Moneyline, a draw is not an option.

When you see a minus sign in front of the odds for New England Patriots it means that they are considered the favourites to win this game. Essentially they are expressing how much money would you need to stake in order to make $100 in profits. Alternatively, if you place $100 on Philadelphia Eagles you would earn $181 in profits.

Minus sign (-) represents how much money you need to stake to make $100.

Plus sign (+) represents how much money are you going to win if you stake $100.
